This contrast is characteristic of this species. The adult has the bare skin of the red head and neck, in addition to a white shield on the back of the neck, visible in good light conditions; when juvenile has a black head. It locates carcasses by smell, being one of the few birds in which this sense is refined. Localiza as carca\u00e7as pelo olfato, sendo uma das poucas aves em que esse sentido \u00e9 apurado. Gra\u00e7as \u00e0 sua capacidade de voo e sensibilidade do olfato, costuma ser o primeiro urubu a chegar na carni\u00e7a.<\/p>\n
