A cabe\u00e7a \u00e9 branca, com listras castanho-escuro nos olhos. O bico \u00e9 preto. Quando a ave mergulha, as v\u00e1lvulas nasais impedem a entrada de \u00e1gua nas narinas, e por esta caracter\u00edstica ela tem facilidade na captura das presas. Os olhos s\u00e3o amarelos. As aves do sexo feminino s\u00e3o ligeiramente maiores em tamanho do que as do sexo masculino. When the bird dives, the nasal valves prevent the entry of water in the nostrils, and for this characteristic it is easy to capture prey. The eyes are yellow. Female birds are slightly larger in size than males.
