The back is dark brown. The wings and tail are dark brown; the primary remiges have a slight whitish border, more evident at the base. The breast and rump are yellow. The beak is curved and pointed, black and pink at the base. They have the habit of piercing the calyx of flowers to reach the nectar, much appreciated in their food.
